Next BONDI codefest event announced in London

The next BONDI CodeFest will take place in London from Monday 8th to Thursday 11th March inclusive.

Codefest events take place with the aim of driving forward the code within the BONDI Reference Implementation which itself drives the BONDI specifications. The Codefest is also used as an event to create new widgets which use and show off the capabilities of the BONDI interfaces. These events are strictly for code developers. 

If you would like more information about attending the next BONDI codefest, please contact bondi@omtp.org.  The session on Monday will start at lunchtime, at 13:00 GMT. Tue, Wed and Thurs sessions will start at 09:00 GMT.

LG SDK 2.01 for Mobile Widgets supporting BONDI

The LG SDK for Mobile Widgets allows developers to create widgets for LG mobile phones quickly and easily. The LG SDK for Mobile Widgets is based on the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) Widgets 1.0 specifications, supports a subset of the Open Mobile Terminal Platform (OMTP) BONDI 1.01 Approved Release, and includes some LG specific APIs. The LG mobile phone supporting installation of widgets created with the LG SDK will be available soon.

BONDI version 1.5 (Public Working Draft)

OMTP have published the first public working draft of the 1.5 documentation for BONDI at http://bondi.omtp.org/1.5/pwd-1/.

Take a look at the proposed new APIs including Bluetooth, Crypto and Telephony.

There are currently seven interfaces in scope of the BONDI 1.5 public working draft.

Interface	Description
APDU API	This module allows the communication between web application and a smart card by using the Application Protocol Data Units (APDUs). An APDU is a short message represented by bytes. APDU messages are either commands or responses. APDU protocol is defined by ISO 7816-4 and is described in the Java Card Development Kit documentation at http://java.sun.com/products/javacard/.
Bluetooth API	This API provides access to the bluetooth functionality. This set of interfaces provides a framework for short range device and service discovery of other bluetooth devices. Once a service has been discovered it is then possible to connect to this service and exchange data.
Crypto API	The crypto API provides cryptographic functions like hashing, signature verification, encrypting and decrypting to allow exchanging data between a server and a BONDI client securely (encrypting/decrypting), protecting data integrity (one-way hashing) and verifying the authentity of data (digital signatures).
DLNA API	This API enables discovery of the DLNA devices in the local network, control of the devices. It shall/could be coupled with the Media Player API for local playback.
Server Push API	This API provides functionality of OMA Push delivery to Web Applications running in the widget context, which includes; registration/deregistration of web applications with the Push enabler and delivery of Push content to the registered application(s).
Sensor API	Sensor API Sensors are classified by type. Sensor type names are defined Strings, and creation new type names must be centrally defined (by the owner of this API definition).
Telephony API	This API provides access to core telephony functions, boht incoming and outgoing calls.

BONDI has a great week at Mobile World Congress #MWC10

With the announcement of the Wholesale Applications Community on Monday of MWC10 and the prominence of the announcement on page 1 of the show daily, it was obvious that the OMTP office team would be pretty busy with enquiries during the week. With pretty much back to back meetings each day as well as the late evening discussions over one or two beers, it was an exhausting but very satisfying time. BONDI surfing in Barcelona #MWC10

Visitors to the Mobile World Congress this year may have been surprised by the sight of a surf dude carrying a surf board around the show ground. The surf board (branded BONDI of course) was an ever present site on many of the stands at the Congress this year of companies supporting BONDI. Hundreds of photos were taken of the congress visitors with the surf board including a great shot of the OMTP CMO, the BONDI surf board and the GSMA One API ladies.

Wholesale Applications Community makes a busy week for OMTP

With the front page of MWC daily announcing the new Wholesale Applications Community and the use of OMTP BONDI requirements, it was unsurprising that OMTP has been pretty busy this year talking about what this means for the future of BONDI on devices. With demonstrations this year of real devices and several BONDI SDKs for developers to start work on BONDI, the Wholesale Applications Community announcement gives developers the motivation to get started on the development of BONDI web applications and widgets.

Stephen Fry sees BONDI widgets

With Stephen Fry being at Mobile World Congress this year, it was great to see him on the Samsung stand and coming to the BONDI booth to see and hear about the developments with BONDI devices and widgets. Toby Ealdon from OMTP demonstrated a BONDI widget on the Samsung Wave device showng a clock with integrated calendar entries. No tweets from SF, but we think he liked it!

OMTP Announces Winners of BONDI widget competition

‘Green’ widget cycles into top spot and picks up $5000 First Prize

London, UK and MWC, Barcelona – February 14^th 2010- The OMTP has today announced the winners of its BONDI widget competition. Seven winners in total were selected by a panel of mobile industry judges with the $5000 top prize being awarded to a bike sharing application, submitted by Italian developer Andrea Vitaletti, which informs the user of the nearest bike sharing location.

 “We were very pleased by the creativity of the developers who entered our competition and were delighted to have submissions from all over the world,” said Tim Raby, Managing Director OMTP “The winning BONDI widgets were selected based upon their usability and functionality. Due to its truly open environment we look forward to seeing many more widgets being developed as BONDI continues to progress throughout 2010.”

The seven winning widgets are:

1. Bike Sharing – Andrea Vitaletti , Italy - How far is the closest bike sharing station from my current position? How many bikes are there?  A widget exploiting BONDI API, Google Maps and AJAX.  It currently works on the bike sharing services in Rome, but it can be easily extended to support other locations and sharing services (e.g. car-sharing).
2. Jogg-O-Mat – Christian Fuhrhop, Germany - Jogg-O-Mat can be used when jogging around laps.It determines when a lap has been completed and shows (for subsequent laps) whether the jogger is faster or slower than on the best, the last and an average lap.
3. Geosurfer – Lukas Schmidt, Germany - How far is it to the next surfing beach? How do I get there?
4. Golf Buddy -  Mark Colley, UK - This Widget uses a BONDI enabled handset to measure the distance of a golf shot.
5. Combo Widget – Ravindra Dudda – India - A widget that uses many BONDI APIs such as messaging, calendar, contacts etc. to provide a basic phone user interface
6. Zhiing - Michael Ayles – USA - zhiing Chat is a send-to-mobile / send-to-email widget.  It enables the user to send their location to a phone or email address and have an IM-like conversation with existing zhiing users.
7. Quiz - Richard Wilson - UK - Help Sir Quizalot rescue the fair maiden by answering the trivia questions correctly!
